Who was Lewis Latimer

Lewis Latimer, born in 1848, was a true renaissance man. Over the course of his lifetime he was a draftsman, inventor, author, poet and family man. Other aspects of his life include:

  • Son of runaway slaves
  • Served his country in the Union Navy as a cabin boy
  • Inventor of a “water closet” for railway cars
  • Working for Thomas Edison, invented and patented the process for manufacturing carbon filaments in the original light bulb
  • Author of the book, “Incandescent Electric Lighting: A Practical Description of the Edison System”
  • Only Black member of The Edison Pioneers, a group of inventors who worked closely with Thomas Edison
